I was born in 1966 in Ireland.
In 1977, my teacher commented: “Excellent – beautiful form and content in his writing – very talented”.
I took the Leaving Certificate in 1983 & 1984 in 4 languages and 4 STEM subjects. An English teacher said “has a formidable command of language and logic”.
I studied Natural Sciences, specializing in biochemistry, at Trinity College, Dublin and was awarded my Moderatorship (honours BA) in 1988.
Then I moved to Dundee, where I wrote a PhD that was mainly in the field of protein chemistry, and graduated in 1993.
Then came a 2-year postdoc appointment in Munich. Followed by another in Graz, where I worked on NO Synthase, a pretty cool enzyme, from 1995–2000.
After that I worked for 2 years as an English teacher, in many companies all over Styria.
Since 2002 I have been self-employed as a translator, editor, writer and language/writing coach.
And I’ve been teaching a technical writing course to students of software development at FH Joanneum since 2020.
